A New Life - as a farmer down south

Posted by Nigel J. W. Ong

travelled down to central Otago to start working for a fruit orchard a few days ago. here is what i saw and think along the journey, and also ill write a little about my 'humble abode'.

the fruit orchard im working in currently is called 'Jones' family orchard'. 45km away from Queenstown. The closest town (5km) from this orchard is called Cromwell, with a population of 4000+-. a small town indeed.

upon arrival, i was greeted by Diane, which i think is the orchard owner's wife. she drove me around the town, and show me some important places. forget about big brands like Jeans West, or Starbucks Coffee, or Vodafone. there is none of it here. franchises that i already know (those exsisted in auckland) are BNZ, national bank, Video Ezy, and fortunately, NewWorld. at least i can get myself some groceries here.

i was then ferried to my accomodation. it fell a bit out of my expectation. i expect big dormitory with bunk beds lined up, in a brick-layed house. What i got in the end, is a small wooden house in the size of an typical african hut, with 3 beds in it. the carpet smelled a bit funny, i would say its a combination of cats and dogs smell. the structure is a bit run-down, not insulated properly, and there is not heater or warming. luckily ill be here during the summer, cant imagine it when people are here during the winter. there is a common house right behind it, where shower, toilet, kitchen and tv lounge is located. at least i can watch some tv when im bored. as only 2 "huts" and a few caravan will share the facility, its not too crowded. im glad for that.

living with me in the hut is a Japanese backpacker called Taka, and a German called Henrik. ill write more about them as i get to know them better.

im writing this entry from Queenstown, as my cellphone broke down yesterday. i tried to find a cellphone shop in Cromwell, and to my horror, there was none. my only option is to come to Queenstown and purchase one here. crazy aye?

ill post some pictures about my 'humble abode' some other time, as i didnt bring my camera along. bugger bugger bugger!

There is not internet access around the orchard, and there is only 1 internet cafe in Cromwell, and they only have 4 computers. but ill try to keep you readers updated as frequent as i can.
